Back Chat (2008)

Whilst on sabbatical in Australia, director Kristine Landon-Smith saw the Iranian film 10 - ten conversations in the back of a taxi, the first being a son berating his mother (the taxi driver) for separating from his father.

The film feels improvised - fresh and spontaneous - and the seemingly improvised text in the first episode of the film was one of the funniest Kristine had heard. She was inspired to recreate a similar situation with her own children as part of her journey to film.

She drove around the suburbs of Sydney for three hours presenting her children with various improvisations and directing them from the driving seat. Back Chat is the result.
