The Good Person of Sichuan

by Bertolt Brecht

translated by Michael Hofmann

With students from Italia Conti in their second year of study.

The Good Person of Sichuan is an intensely theatrical work that begins when the gods come to earth in search of a good person. They award money to the prostitute Shen Te but all try to take advantage of her good nature. To save herself from bankruptcy, she has to invent and impersonate someone of a ruthless and cunning nature. Topical and as relevant today as it was when it was first written on the eve of the Second World War.
